DMT 8C Preparation
Hi guys,
What is the recommended procedure to prep a DMT Coarse 325 plate, before I use it to lap Norton stones? I know there is a recommendation to "run in" the plate, but what seems to be the acceptable, or correct way?

Thanked: 13245Lapping stones, is a great way to break in the plate...
The only thing you might do is rub a round screwdriver shank up and down the DMT a few times to knock off any high diamonds before you start lapping, but really you don't need too...

I sharpened two kitchen knives and mine calmed down a lot.

A DMT 325 I see no problem,,, your going to look at it and feel it anyway, if there is a huge problem you will see it in the first second or so...again rubbing it with the shank of an old screw driver will knock off any errant high diamonds anyway...
PS: lapping Naniwa SS's with a Continuous Diamond plate is best done under running water...Last edited by gssixgun; 08-05-2010 at 09:43 PM.

Thanked: 4942I use my DMT 325's right out of the box for lapping and have not found the need to do anything and I've been through a few of them.........
I would add to Glen's that the DMT under water is really key on the higher grit Naniwa Superstones like the 8K, 10K and 12K. If not lapping under the running water, the stone wants to stick to the DMT. It is not near as bad on the 1K and 3K and marginal with the 5K
Now for the DMT 8K, I definitely feel the need for a break in and will do at least 100 X strokes on a junk razor before a nice one hits it. Even with that, I don't use it often as it really is an abrasive cutter to me. There are those who like it though.
Have fun,

Me too. I got the DMT C and DMTXX for sole purpose of lapping. Took it out of the box, and started lapping...No problems....
We have assumed control !

Well, that settles it! I guess I will just start lapping straight-out when I get it, after I have had a nice look at the diamonds! Thanks guys!

Thanks for the reply, Glen. Yes, I was talking about the 325 and just wanted to make sure since I recently began lapping my Naniwas and used it right out of the box.
What prompted me to ask this question was I read (another forum??) that guys were talking about running it across their garage floor. I thought this was a overkill and used it right out of the box.
