Thanked: 2591the slurry stone is not for lapping.
If you do not have a DMT, you can use 325 sand paper on a hard flat surface.Stefan

Wet and dry sandpaper on a flat surface (eg glass) will do the job and I've not yet seen the need to lap any of my coticules more than once.

The slurry stone is not large enough to use for a lap. Mainaman's suggestion of 325 wet/dry sand paper is a good one. A kitchen counter top would work OK but will not be as flat as a glass plate. You want as large a surface to lat on as is practical and a regular sheet of wet dry(8" x 10") will do fine but nor cut as fast as a DMT.
When does your coticule need lapping? It varies depending on your particular coticule, how much you are honing (restores compared to maintaining) and your honing technique.“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” (A. Einstein)

You seem to be confused about lapping. Check this link. It should answer your questions...: Hone Lapping 101 - Straight Razor Place Wiki
A Coticule should last the normal user some time before it needs lapping....You can always check it's flatness by using a straight edge. I hold mine up to a light and if I see Light coming through the straight edge and the stone, then it needs lapping...Hope this helps...

Thanked: 4942Once lapped, I have only had to re-lap my Coticule's when they get dished out from my slurry stones.
Have fun,

Thanked: 3795Because most of the wear on a hone tends to be in the middle, I specifically use the slurry stone just on the ends. This reduces dishing in the center and does have a lapping effect by partially balancing out the wear over the length of the stone.
