Thanked: 2209Internet video chat and honing...
Today was a first for me. One of our members contacted me via Skype and we had a honing lesson. Both of us had Skype loaded on our computers and both of us had both a web camera and a microphone. We opened up the video to full screen and I was able to help him with his honing both by example and by watching him and commenting as he went along.
I enjoyed helping in this manner so if any of you have either Skype or Yahoo Messenger with webcam capabilities then feel free to call me at any time (Skype is the best).

I'm going to look at Skype myself.
Incidentally, for all you n00bs; many months ago when I was first learning to hone, Randy gave me his phone number in a Sunday chat session and offered his help to me. I was a bit shy then to be so up front and personal with someone I met on the internet. I contented myself to find my own. I have since learned that not only is this site unlike so many others in that it is run and inhabited by gentlemen which is why I like to hang around, but that Randy himself has continued to offer and provide such help to many others. He's one gentleman of the highest order and you shouldn't hesitate as I did to call him up for help. I'm sorry I didn't. I would have saved myself countless hours on the hone learning what I could easily have been shown. Sorry I didn't talk to you then Randy, but thanks for the offer. Maybe we'll find an excuse to connect over something else.

Do you guys mind if I share this skype story around work? The reason I ask is that I work at eBay, and we happen to own skype. We're always interested in how people are using skype in new and interesting ways and this is a *perfect* example of a creative and interesting use for it.

Thanked: 1Randy,
An excellent idea, but just two draw backs for me, one is that the time difference may make it difficult but not impossible and the second I don't have a web cam. I am just asking some friends if they have a web cam I can borrow.
That said I would love to have a lesson, how about you record a simple how to using your web cam and then make it available to all in the files section.
You could do two one a relatively shave ready razor that just need a quick hone and the other a razor that is dull.
Many thanks.

hmm looks like I may have to get a new webcam....
on a side note...I am dreading the day when someone on an internet capable flight starts talking (read yelling) on skype in the seat next to me....then I'll be forced to beat him into submission with his own headset and possibly be banned from flying on that airline! Another option would be to bring my electronic ear protection that I use at the range with me...I cant hear a damned thing wit those on and the volume off...but I dont know how the TSA would feel about all that gun powder residue...
Ay any rate...for this particular application I think skype is great! Maybe I'll start honing sooner than I had planned lol....

Having talked to both Randy and Theo for many hours on Sunday, I can tell you Skype is the greatest thing since sliced bread. The video and sound are so far superior to Yahoo messenger, it's like comparing Big Blue to a TRS-80.

Thanked: 2209Feel free to use this story!
I really like Skype. The voice and video are much better than the others and the feature set is really useful.
The only thing I wish for is the ability to capture either the video that I send or the video that I receive and then be able to save it to a video hosting service. I would be willing to pay $50 per year for that video hosting service.
