Just received my new USB computer Microscope. It is a Veho VMS-004.
See attached pictures of razor edge.

can you view the razor "live" with that microscope, or does it just do photos?

Hi,
It is live. so you can move it around to view the run of the edge. It will also record micro movies but at high magnification they are kind of jittery. It came with a nice articulated base too so you don't have to hold it and has LED lights around the lens to light up the sample.
The best part is that it only lightened my wallet about $66us with shipping.

Thanked: 3795Wow! I really like my stereomicroscope for honing but yours is great for documentation and for teaching other via the computer screen.

Hi,
I've been learning the honing process recently. So that put me on the track of looking into find a way to see the edge. I bought some loops 30x and 40x and even a little 60x with LED. But I need more magnification. I thought about a proper micro scope and saw that light the subject can be an issue unless you have one designed for this type of viewing.
At first I tried using my USB video cam to look through the loop. It was neat but not functional. Then I saw a DIY microscope that you can make from the optics in a cd/dvd drive. So I found a junk DVD drive on my shelf hand my kid a screw driver and hammer and watch him take it apart. The lazer optic worked real well but would not stay in place. I did not really want to glue them either.
So that put my head in the USB microscope hunt. I found this one that would not break the bank. It seems to work well. I also saw that they sell eye piece inserts to convert a traditional microscope to a USB computer screen viewer.

Hey Mike,
Glad you like yours and good shots of edges too . But, it seems like it could use a bit more powerful lighting.
I recently ordered the same one (Adorama)...I haven't gotten it yet...it was back ordered. I should get it very soon (hopefully)
I do have a full size stereo scope (from lab...an old one), but it is heavy and takes up space. It is a great scope, but don't want to invest $700 for a goose-neck, dual fiber optic lighting for it...without it, it is hard to make anything out.
If this Veho works, I will take the old, big one back to lab for my guys/gals to use.

Hi,
Thanks. It has variable lighting too. I have had my scope for about a day now. I think part of the darker shot is the angle of the bevel to the light sources. I really like this unit. The only challenge is focusing at high magnification. With the bas provided it can move, even the tiniest bit seem like a lot at high magnification. So I'm thinking I try to figure out a more stable or fixed base to mount to. That and it would be nice to be able to raise and lower the scope to change the focal point of the sample as it is proportional to the distance from the end of the scope. So if you don't want 400x you have to have more distance between the scope and the subject.

Thanked: 3This is a neat idea. I've tried a loup and then the 10$ radio shack job. Both are major pain to focus and get the edge "just right" because of focal length.
I might try your set up and use silly putty bases to keep the edge safe and visible.
