I use a 325 DMT to lap my Shaptons, Naniwas and all my naturals and it works great! Plus it doubles up as an aggressive edge repairer if you need it.

I dont advocate spending money unless you need to but this really is one of those stones thats worth it weight in gold..!

I was to cheap to buy the DMT and already had a glass plate so I bought lapping grits starting at 80 180 220 400 and 600 they seem to work great and total cost was only 18 dollars for all of them. It only takes a pinch each lapping session as well so it should last, not as long as a DMT though.

    Default LLL

I actually have a glass cutting board I use for lapping from Walmart. I never thought of putting grit straight to it. I have diamond from.25 to 1

Haven't seen this mentioned here, so I will.

I've been using a Naniwa extra-large flattening stone for a while, having tried everything else, and I won't be going back. The main advantage is size: it's much bigger than my biggest stone, so the edges of the stone never extend beyond the edges of the flattener, which I feel is important. Also, the grooves help keep it from (a) sticking (big problem with DMT) and (b) loading up (a problem with DMT and sandpaper). It's 220 grit, and doesn't leave visible scratches on any of my stones. Because I'm obsessive, though, I tend to finish the lapping using a piece of worn 220 wet/dry paper on plate glass.

Here's a link to what I'm talking about:
