Great! thanks for info gents, It's nice to know it's normal wear and the edge will still shave fine. I'll tackle it again this time with maybe just one layer of tape or no tape at all. I apologize I know I'm quit a newb, I have read allot in the wiki section but nothing really helps more than actual wisdom passed on.

No apologies needed. Virtually any question you can think to ask has probably been asked and answered here several times, but that's how all of us continue to learn. The questions keep the conversation going!

I know we all get a kick out of it when we see an old eBay beater that's so worn that it looks more like a needle than a razor. But I think the truth is that even very worn blades can shave like mad. Someone just kept honing those things until there was nothing left to hone. Either it was a fabulous razor that they wouldn't give up.... or maybe it was a piece of junk that they just honed to death out of frustration.

Either way -- enjoy it.

LOL, that's pretty funny and probably more true than I know.

But thank you all for the encouragement, it really does help a beginner like me keep trodden on
