Pictures of ERN
Not sure if you can tell by the photos or not on how ground down the spine is. I had to shrink them quit a bit to upload them. Ignore the date, camera reset back to original manufactured date.
The edge had 3 fairly large nicks in it which I had removed with a 220 then 1000 then diamond and to a honing stone(not sure on grit) Carrie and JoeD gave me the name of a local store were I can pick up the stones or order if needed. I'll be working on it much more, as of now believe it or not I can shave with it with some burn but not a whole lot.
The spine was already ground down quite a bit when I got it. I had to put like 8 layers of tape over the spine to get close to the proper angle.
Any thoughts would greatly be appreciated.

Thanked: 3795I think part of the reason for the poor shave is the number of layers of tape. Even with that hone wear, you shouldn't need more than a couple of layers of tape.

At first glance I couldn't tell what was the spin and what was the blade. Good luck, I am sure it will turn out a good shaver.

K thanks I'll keep that in consideration, I'll be getting all new stones here in the near future 4000/8000 and a 12k. I know sending it out would ideal, but this razor is pretty bad and wouldn't want anyone to share my misery.
Besides I believe it to be an excellent learning tool.

More of an estimate than anything, I kept putting tape on until the shape matched what I thought was missing from the steel. I was exaggerating It was actually 4 layers to be exact. Sorry for the misleading text
Believe me I appreciate any help I can get and please don't feel like your hurting my feelings, I have pretty thick skin.
I don't want to give anyone any false information in thinking they have to have that much tape on the spine, I know it's extreme but the amount of steel missing from the spine is also extreme. It's like some one previously to me tried to sharpen it on a butchers stone or a badly worn 220.
I was worried that without the tape the edge would become very wide and very fragile and the spine would wear even more.

Thanked: 3795OK, thanks for letting me know about your skin condition.
Keep in mind that as a razor's spine is worn and narrowed, the width of the blade is also narrowed. The result is that the geometry of the bevel remains approximately the same. In other words, hone wear is just a normal part of the life of a razor!

From what I understand about over taping, if you tape too much of the razor the shave becomes poor because the angle need to get a good shave becomes impossible. For example, with 8 layers of tape, it seems like the spine of the razor would have to lay so flat on your face to shave correctly that it would be awkward.

Thanked: 1371I have lots of old beater blades that have severe hone wear. I just keep honing them without tape. As long as the steel is good, they still take a shaving edge.
