Thread: dmt 4k/8k/coti

i normaly do all my honing on coticule.

so today i fancyed a change and got my very first hone out . the 4k/8k combo. which we don't here much about these days.

any way i set the bevel on my henkels. the razor was able to shave arm hair easily. this indicates the bevel is set nicley.

then i did 60 laps on 4k norton then i did 20 laps on 8k followed by another 10 laps on 8k. i felt that the razor was shave ready at this stage.

i then did 50 laps on coticule my hybrid side.

this process did'nt take long.
and it was quite easy.

the shave was as good as it gets . infact if i did'nt no any other i would of thought this razor had been honed on just coticule alone. the edge was smooth and gentle as coticule .

so this method is also very simple . and it does work very well .

Gary, the dmt you set the bevel with was the 1200 ? I guess that is a given but for the benefit of new guys it is worth mentioning. The norton 4/8 is a great workhorse and the shave you can get from it alone is quite good. The coticule being icing on the cake.

Gary did you use a light slurry as you started on the Coticule???
That seems to work best for me... I call it "training" the edge to the stone..

yes i should be more clear. i set bevel on a old dmt 1200 6x2 i quite like the dmt's especialy for bevel setting.

then it was straight to 4k then 8k.

i used just water on my coticule i guess you could start on a very yhin misty slurry then finish on water. i used just water, the edge was smooth as. may be 1o laps on crox would be a nice finish to.

Geez Gary, You mean to tell me you "Normally" use a Coticule, I'm glad you told me, I never would have known that....

Gary, The Nortons and Naniwa's are great, Nice consistent results. The real workhorses if you will. I tell guys this all the time.
The Coti adds a nice finishing touch...Well Done Mate!...Glad to see you use something else....

I just received an Ebay special in the mail, an old Torrey, "The Celebrated" It'll looks nice, I did some resto yesteray, and today I'll break out the Norton 1k, and then the Nani's and try Glen's method...

my first ever hone was my 4k'8k and i all ways held on to it. infact a mate of mine cut it in half so mine is 8x1.5 , but its a great size... i do agree i can see why they get recomended so often.i always did like my nortons . with a little bit more no how i can get the most out of the nortons, then try some differant finishers

Gary do you get a massive case of stiction on the hybrid side where the blade actually stops or wants to with no pressure even and you have to force it along when under water?

yes i newster get a lot of sticky ness but for some reason it has calmed down with use . i'd give it a real good lapping. i get a magnetic feel still. and the odd judger. i think it due to doing so many laps with back and forth strokes,

What is the hybrid side of a coticule?

The more strokes I do with a razor the worse it gets. It starts out almost non existant and by 50or 75 strokes its pretty intense.
