Cr0x Paste
Im a noob but can hone my razor and have heard alot on post about pasting a strop and want to try it. When you get the paste do you get directions on how to paste or what you can put the paste on. I only have one strop so are there other options and do you recomend it for newbies

Thanked: 1263Definately get another strop to paste...don't use it everyday! A pasted strop is for refining the edge after honing or refreshing the edge. I went out and bought a cheaper paddle strop that I paste. Check out the WIKI here, I believe there's a tutorial or 2 on there..and remember when doing it, less is more. Hope this helps

Check the local hobby store for some balsa between 2.5 and 3 inches wide
and about 24 inches long. Glue it to something for strength and
paste it with CrOx paste and give it a try. Apply it lightly and as you apply
more over time it will get quite dark green.
A stick of CrOx paste or a jar of CrOx mixed with Neatsfoot oil
is enough to make a dozen balsa strop/hones and also paste
another dozen strops. So if you like the result from this
go for a leather strop. The price can be good Michaels sells 1/4" x
3" x 3' sections of balsa for a little over $5.
Look for "the good stuff" Chrome Oxide that is about 0.5 micron
is ideal.

I like that idea and i do woodworking so I have all kinds of scrap lumber for this little project. I had heard of using balsa for that and now will give that a try. How many laps do you do on this type of paste and is it hone then paste then linnen then leather on my razor, thank you

Not more than 10 works fine for me. You are just polishing the blade. Take your time. Then you can go to the leather 30 to 50 laps. Check the blade on your shave ready face. It should be about right. If not, a little more on the CrOx. Have fun with this and be aware....this is addictive!

You will need another strop or paddle. I like paddles for pastes. I don't like straight out balsa wood, but it will work. If you have a leather shop nearby, you can get cheap cowhide. I'd put some leather on it.. I have a Tandy leather by me. Google it. They sell 3" w x 50' L pieces of cowhide, cheap. I made a couple of paddles myself. Most stores even have left over scraps from the classes on leather working. I'm sure they'd give you a 3" x 12" piece if you ask. I'd glue a piece of leather to wood, the end result is so much better imo.
