Thanked: 18Can use BBW to create slurry on coticule?
Hello, I was able to buy a nice vintage BBw/ coticule stone on Ebay, and now I need a slurry stone. Can use a BBw stone to raise slurry on coticule? The garnets are the same in BBw and coticule?
Thanks
Livio

I would say yes you can. I have done it matter of fact. Purple slurry but slurry just the same.

Thanked: 4942I agree with Jimmy and would add that I have used just the plain old no name Nagura's from Japan Woodworks and had good results when I use a Coticule.
Have fun,
Lynn

There is no reason that you couldn't, but I don't. In fact I won't. I prefer to use all of my senses while honing. I like to see the color of the slurry change as steel is removed especially while I am still learning a hone. I would (if in your situation) create slurry with a DMT instead. Then order a slurry stone from Zib or the superior shave.

Thanked: 67I've used BBW slurry on a coticule. It works fine...on par with a coticule slurry. There may be minor differences in speed, but they're insignificant.
The edge quality winds up being the same, after you finish on just water.

Just for the heck of it I just whipped some up to refresh my memory. I was at work some time ago with a coticule and no slurry stone with me. I had a separate hunk of bbw though so used it.
Now what surprised me was the color of he slurry was the purple, not the lighter yellow coticule. The stuff I just generated was the same. Maybe a touch lighter purple but the bbw definitely dominated the mix.
That surprised me since I thought that the slurry coming off of the hone would be at least equal to if not more than that coming off of the small slurry stone. Just an interesting.... to me aside since I guess it is the same no matter if it is a coticule, j-nat, Escher or whatever ? Probably doesn't make a dimes worth of difference in the final outcome.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

My experience with BBW slurry stone on coticule was that the slurry was mostly purple.
Likewise, I have an eggplant colored coticule that I used a cream slurry stone on and it yielded a creamy slurry...

Gee I don't know. The bbw definitely is the dominant portion of the mix when used on the yellow. OTOH when it is yellow coti to yellow coti I don't know which surface is abrading the most. Maybe they are more or less equal.
While I was typing I got an idea I took the yellow and generated slurry on the bbw. Same color as the other way round. Then I took a bbw on bbw and it is so close to bbw on yellow ..... the bbw on yellow may be a shade lighter purple ... maybe not. If a member with a scientific bent and a powerful stereoscope was to examine the combinations maybe they could figure it out.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
