Thanked: 0Fall in line...
I love honing, it is solitary, relaxing and enjoyable.
I get to zone out and rub away the distractions of the day/week. It is mindless and requires nothing of me but to hold a steady hand and check my progress from time to time...
I can freely run through my thoughts and ideas as I "piddle".
While I am enjoying my "me time" I am left to my own devices. When I am finished there are chores to do and people to please.
This is why I enjoy honing...

I do remember asking Ron, "Do you feel that it's a waste of the urine or the water" (when flushing toilets at work), and he said "Both."
Sorry for going off topic again. What happens in MN should probably stay in MN.

While the first post is very well put, this is a turning out to be an even better thread than I imagined from the title

I've been honing various things for almost 30 years. With razors only few years and more with work & kitchen knives and hand tools. It very relaxing and one of those few things in the world where it is all up to myself. I do not have too many hones but just enough to make the jobs done.
Little by little you learn to know how different edges and steels behave and what is the easiest way to make them sharp. And the results never fail: if the blade isn't sharp then the only man to blame is the one that looks from the mirror.'That is what i do. I drink and i know things'

Thanked: 121True story:
Last year, after I received a shipment of two lovely Jnats from Old School, in my excitement I walked into the next office (wherein dwells a lovely young woman) and asked, "Susan, would you like to see my set of Nakayamas?"
She visibly blushed (rendering her yet more attractive) and replied softly, "My goodness, I don't think I'm quite yet prepared for that." This has become a bit of a joke around the office.

Takes hone envy to a whole new level eh
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
