Thanked: 121Why I enjoy honing
This question has been in the back of my mind since I started a couple of years ago. This is what I have concluded.
First, it is a solitary activity. Almost every other activity in my life involves other people, which means negotiation and compromise, and this usually frustrates me more than it should. My business life, my family life, even my social life demands that I be conscious and considerate of others, adapt to some degree to their needs and priorities, keep track of who feels how about what, etc. Who do I need to get to sign off on this project? Shall we go to the beach or the mountains? If I give in on the new carpet, will she give me pass on Tuesday night poker?
When I hone I get to make all the decisions and take all the responsibility. I have no one else to please, no one elses opinions to consider. I can relax. I need to please no one but myself.
Second, and a corollary to the above, I can seek perfection without annoying anyone. Compromising with others always leads to less than ideal outcomes. People become impatient. When I hone, I known that through my own effort and imagination and perseverance I will eventually produce a precise and beautiful thing. Perhaps artisans, carpenters, artists and others are able to find this in their daily occupations, but in my life only honing a razor gives me this reward.
This is why I love to hone.

I love honing because it is less frustrating than the basket weaving they used to make me do at the hospital.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

Thanked: 3795I can relate. Officially, I am autistic. I'm not sure if I have ever believed that, but I do know that I tend to be "different," yet the only ways that I consider that I used to meet the criteria was/is that I did not start to speak until I was almost 6 and I have always been calmed by repetitive actions. I simply feel better when I am honing. It is the best way for me to relax at the end of the day.

Why I like honing
I like honing because it eventually drives my wife mad. Sometimes I drool a little bit while I'm doing it just to watch her practically run out of the room. Love is grand.
Don't get hung up on hanging hairs.

Thanked: 3795That's funny. I'm happy to say that my wife is the opposite. She wants to learn how to hone. She has already had a honing lesson from Randy (I'm smart enough to know not to provide it myself) at the Iowa Meetup and she also attended last weekend's Minnesota Meetup. I figure she is a keeper just for tolerating me!
Regarding the drool, that's a great way to progressively dilute your slurry without needing to reach for your spray bottle!

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.
