Thanked: 10How do you use a Frankonian?
I admit probably a stupid question but I just ordered one to use as a finisher and I have a couple of questions.
Will I need to create a slurry with this stone or do I only use water or a oil?If it does need slurry what do I use to create it with?I do not believe it comes with a slurry stone.
Will this stone over hone my razor if I do too many laps?I can do hundreds of laps on my coticule and it will not harm the razor at all and I wonder if this stone is the same.

Thanked: 2591you can use DMT for slurry.
Just use with water, but make sure the edge is very good before you jump to it.
Also good luck lapping itStefan

I use my DMT as well. It was the biggest PITA stone to lap that I've ever used - definitely no thuringian. I vary from going slurry to water or just water only, but have had best results just with a final finish off water. Make sure your coticule edge is completely maxed out before going to it.

Thanked: 10Thanks for the replies.I did not think about lapping the stone.I just looked at the site and it says that it comes lapped on one side.Does it come to me ready to use or do I have to buy a DMT?

Thanked: 3795I borrowed a Frankonian from JimmyHAD last year and he left it to me to lap it. It took a long time, so I'm glad that the one I recently bought from him was the same one I had already lapped.
I have no idea what site you bought it from but if they claim it to be lapped then the odds are good that it is already flat. I would check it with a straight edge to confirm it though. You will also want to check to see if the edges are chamfered. If not, you can do that easily with just sandpaper.

Thanked: 10I bought it at Olivia-Seif.de.I sent her an e-mail asking if the stone will be lapped and ready to go and I am waiting her reply.
I have my fingers crossed hoping she says it will be ready to use when I get it.Especially after reading everyone who replied saying how hard it is to lap.
I looked up the prices on a 325 grit DMT plate and $55 is alot to me for something I would only use once.

Thanked: 3795And you would use it only once, because that plate is not designed for lapping natural stones. DMT declares that it is acceptable to lap synthetic water stones with it, but lapping a natural stone, especially one as hard as that one, would destroy it by undercutting the diamonds. You would end up with just a smooth flat plate. You would be much better off using coarse wet/dry sandpaper followed by more fine paper until you are satisfied with the surface.
