Thanked: 485Getting a Point Rounded...
Hi,
Please forgive me if this is in the wrong spot, possibly it should be in 'Classifieds', as in "wanting to know who can DO the work rather than ADVERTISING work".
I've just bought the attached razor (not my picture), to go with my Burrell. The Burrell is a 5/8 square point (spike). The new one Wade and Butcher is also a square point, 7/8. I've only been shaving (what I did for the last 34 years can't REALLY be called shaving now I've done it the REAL way ) for about a week, but I'm already finding the hard parts; evidenced by that horrible sight of red in the shaving cream on my face (a minor cut and a minor bad scrape). The hard parts for me are all of LH under jawline and bottom RH jawline; I'm finding that the toe of the razor cuts into the jawline a bit, also it's just difficult to see; I am learning to feel. The guy I'm getting the Wade and Butcher from says he'll hone it before sending it; which is wonderful. However, I'm considering sending it to someone to have the toe rounded to a round point. Is this possible? Is it wise? I'm thinking it will then give me two distinctly different shaver types to try.
I doubt I'll be able to afford to go past buying two razors. I was thinking of using the Wade and Butcher as a 'Sunday' razor, but then considered this mod (rounding) and thought I could use it at the same time as my other (to do under the jaw); or rotate.
I guess what I'm asking is, SHOULD I get it rounded (if it can be done) or should I just learn to use it 'as is' and retain its form as it was made? Would rounding destroy its worth; not that it's a collectors' item or anything

Don't do it
Sir: That is a beautiful razor, and IMHO it would be a shame to alter it...
and perhaps diminish its value as a collectible.
Consider this....If you are uncomfortable with a spike point blade, for any
reason, there is nothing to compel you to use one. Why not just sell or
trade it and get a round point?
So you understand where I'm coming from, I'm not comfortable with a
spike point either. I have one, a Bengall, and I hardly ever use it. It's just
that, on aesthetic grounds, I would hate to see that beauty tampered with.
Like Chuck Yeager once said, "It can be done, but I wouldn't recommend it."
Paul"If you come up to it, and you just can't do it, then that's jolly well where you are."

Thanked: 485PaulKidd,
Thanks for the reply. Secretly, I think I always thought what you said. Agreed. It stays 'as is' and I learn to use it...Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Thanked: 13247In AU you want to contact Onimaru55 / Oz or Baldy / Grant they are the guys that can help you out down under
That spike can be very slightly dulled just like 1000's of them out there, that will get you through the beginning stages, then after about 3 honing sessions she will be back to "spikey" because the edge will meet the corner again......Last edited by gssixgun; 06-14-2011 at 10:47 AM.

Thanked: 485Hi gssixxgun and mvcrash,
Good advice, might get it dulled, but only if it causes grief.
[edit] I mean grief to ME not IT :-)Last edited by carlmaloschneider; 06-14-2011 at 11:17 AM.

Thanked: 485...Think I'll retract the 'dulling' option and go with leaving 'as is'...
After all, I'm just a 'caretaker', I don't have the right to change it...Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Here is a Fromm with a muted point. To me it is hardly noticeable.
