Smith's make a water based "honing oil". If you want to experiment without oiling up your rocks, seems to be a good way to get the idea. Cleans off with tap water when done. You can change viscosity simply by adding a spritz of water as you hone.

Shooter, Kroil is a penetrant not a lubricant. stick to the sewing machine oil, Nortons, Smiths, Buck or any pipe thread cutting oil you may find at the hardware store.

I'm sorry my friend, but I have to disagree. I actually recommend it to shooters who are in the hunting in the super cold as it is less likely to freeze. On my Charnley Forrest I have found it to be a bit thin. This is why I was wanting to try some sewing machine oil & Kroil together on a 1:1 ratio. For my stone I "think" it may get me where I would want to be.

    From the Kroil website (www.kanolabs.com):

A relatively cheap and effective honing liquid is kerosene. My machinist uncle had his hones soaking in an old 1 lb coffee can of it for decades. When I brought my jointer and planer knives to his shop for regrinding on a jig made to hold them on the right angle on a surface ginder, I removed the wire edge with stones fished out of that old coffee can. The result was knives that very easily shaved my forearm smooth. If you want to thicken it up, add some mineral oil from the drug store.

    good honing, good shaving

Shooter, I noticed that the part about lubrication was rather low on the list. But thanks for the heads up on the address, for some reason the hardware stores around here are no longer carrying it and I am out. No Garage or shop is complete without it. Thank you
