I suggest you stop trying right now, and wait for the razor you sent out for honing. Shave with the known good straight for at least a week, so you get a feel for how a good razor shaves.
When you are brand new even a super sharp razor will feel dull, because your technique isn't there.
Trying to hone before you even know what sharp is, is meaningless, and to be honest, all your threads is evidence of just that.

With all due respect, I think Blix has a point here.
Getting a professionally honed razor for comparison, and a few more shaves under your belt will help you immensely in learning to hone yourself.
In fact, I would bet it would shorten the learning curve significantly!

Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Good! I think you will master it eventually , but you need a benchmark and have some shaving experience first.
Now, I'm pretty much a noob at this myself, but I got off to a better start, as I had a couple friends help me getting going. I have been shaving with razors I honed myself for almost a couple weeks now, and it's super fun.
