Default It was bound to happen but look at the bright side...

    Hello everyone,

This is my first post though I have been lurking here for a while. I started straight shaving a few weeks ago after thinking about it for about a year. So I took the leap and order my new razor and gear from SRD (arrived in excellent shape).

Anyway, I was shaving a few days ago and while rinsing my razor, my 3 year old daughter snuck into my bathroom and hugged my leg. Needless to say it startled me. However, my new Dovo razors blade kissed the edge of the sink

Since this razor will ultimately be my least expensive one, I am going to take the opportunity to try and fix it myself. I have spent hours reading wiki and posts, and watching videos but the only way to really learn it, is to try it.

I plan on taking a conservative path since I dont want to ruin the razor (in case I want to have Lynn fix it ). I was thinking of starting with circles on a 1k to straighten the edge and remove the nick and then move on to the pyramid. Any other recomendations you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

My gear (once I get it this week) will be:

    • norton 220/1000
    • norton 4k/8k
    • 12k chinese waterstone
    • CrOx spray

I also got the norton flattening stone and a Dia-Sharp coarse Stone.

    Thanks,
    Adam

First of all, sorry to hear about the razor!! But at least the razor hit the edge of the sink and not your 3 year old when you were startled... Perhaps you should shave with the door closed from now on?

That set seems good, but my only recommendation is that if you're going to get the DMT course stone, you don't need the Norton flattening stone as the DMT is a good stone for lapping/flattening. Also, what do you plan on putting the CrOx spray onto?

I don't know if you've considered it, but maybe you should put a layer of electrical tape on the spine during most of your restoration work since you will likely have to remove a decent amount of steel to work past the chips. You could take off the tape if you wish after you've worked past the chips. I'm not experienced with repairing ones like that, so wait until others reply as well, but that would be my plan of attack.

Luckily it was the sink and not the small one. I about cut my throat open once when i was shaving ATG on my neck and my wife walked by and smacked me on the arse.

yep. Its her new way of saying "good morning". She is normally not up as early as me which is why it startled me. The REAL bad news is that I have to back to my mach3 razor until I fix the razor

+1 on the 1 layer of electrical tape and the circles. Good luck with it and welcome to SRP. BTW, locking the bathroom door when you shave again is probably your best bet.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Chrom-ox is good stuff but best reserved for a dedicated surface rather than your daily driver. Too much of a good thing. Get some aircraft balsa at a hobby store or a piece of leather or hard felt for the green stuff would be my suggestion.

Sometimes it's hard to get a 3 year old to understand, but my entire family has been told no loud voices, no "boo's", and no touching dad at anytime or anywhere near the shave den. I thought closing the door would help - let me tell you, a kid loudly knocking unexpectedly can be alarming enough.

Sorry about your razor. I'm sure it will return to full service.

I am trying to adjust our morning routine to allow for a nice relaxing shave but I have to accommodate the wife . I had just started shaving in the mornings since I have been getting more consistent shave times while shaving at night where its not such a rush. I might have to get up a little earlier before the wife commandeers the bathroom. It sucks only having one sink.

Anyway, I should have all my equipment this week and I will work on the razor this weekend. Im just gonna take it nice and slow while i work so I can see how the process works and keep my computer and Lynn's DVD nearby. Ill post a pic when I am done so everyone can critique my work. It might take some time but even a honemeister had to start somewhere.

    Thanks

My suggestion might be a little different.
I think this is a difficult method to start honing, but its not impossible.
I would take your DMT, break it in and lap all of your stones. Then with some water and one drop of soap you can take the razor to your DMT with the spine lifted slightly, working in circles and japanese strokes. This method is relatively quick and easier to get to bevel setting after wards.
That being said regular circles are much slower allowing you to make more adjustments as you progress and with anything that does a job faster, it can ruin a job faster as well.

Another frame of thought would be to send it out to be initially fixed and bevel set, then you could learn to hone from there on your stones. That would remove the most difficult part of honing to learn and allow you the opportunity to learn the stroke needed when you start setting bevels and fixing dings.

    Good luck.

I know this isn't an ideal way to start honing. That is why I am going to take it nice and slow. i'm in no hurry. but if i feel I am not making progress, then I will probably send it out for repair. Im a do'er and always have been so I have to try first before I send it out.

I would like to have a second razor to use but if I did that right now, I would end up divorced
