You know, you gotta get what melts your butter! If you think you have to have a 30k, then you gotta have it. You won't be happy until you do, i know from experience. But, if you're not getting the bevel set at 1k you're just polishing the upper edge of the bevel from there on and that's it. it'll feel good on the hone, but it's still an iffy 1k edge. Higher grits are just fluff until they're really working the edge. No offense meant, just a reflection of myself. If I think I gotta have it, I gotta have it! Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. Regards, Howard
Ps Best of luck and do what you gotta do, and enjoy it, that's what it's really all about!!! Oh, wasn't implying you wanted a 30k, just pushing the limits.

Well, what melts my butter is a good shave.
Having had the bevel-setting epiphany early on - I totally agree with your' iffy 1k edge' scenario. The 'polishing a turd' analogy applies here.
FWIW - I'm pretty sure a 30k Shapton would seem dissapointing to me at this point. Fact is - I get what I need with the hones I have now. Any new hones I pick up along the way are about fun, speculation and curiosity - not about 'needing' someting.
I shave well all the time these days... just not off an 8k..lol...

On this website I can't see using the term "overkill" since pretty much everything beyond a single razor, cream/soap, brush and strop is overkill, maybe with a barber's hone thrown in. I have the Norton 4k/8k, the 220/1k, a DMT 325, a Chinese 12k (that I haven't used yet as I am attempting to get shaveable edges off the 8k as part of my learning process) and an as-yet-unidentified, very hard stone I got on Ebay for a reasonable price, which I probably won't use for a while.
Overkill? I guess. Fun? Yep.
It gives me something to shoot for.
