Gentlemen, I had the most amazing shave right off the Norton a couple hours ago.
I looked at the edge in the scope before the shave and did see more scratches than I like, so I gave it another
"20 laps to dry", and the edge looked waaay finer. A lot more polished.
And it really did the trick. The edge was sharp and very smooth, like impossibly smooth for a 8k edge! :)
I believe I've seen the light!

So todays honing session was 20 laps on the 8k, then 50/100 on a Illinois #827
BAM, a top 10 shave at least.
Hey all so i have a Norton Prep stone question....is anyone using it to make a slurry?? I watched in glen's video he made a while back that he used it and i went ahead and experimented with it but it didn't really seem to do what i think it should it seemed to "gum up" no matter how went the 4k was. should the prep stone be soaked as well or what else could i be messing up? it seems to drink any amount of water i have on the 4k thanks!
I picked up an Artificial "Nagura" Stone from Lee Valley, which I'd intended to use to raise the slurry on my 4k/8k.
Is this in line with JaNortan specifications? I see you state we should not use a special nagura. Hopefully, this evening will allow me enough free time for honing.
I think then it would be "out"
"Yes slurry is allowed, but no special nagura, only use either a Norton prep stone, a Norton Lapping stone, or a diamond plate to produce it"
thats from glen's first post.....but thats not to say that you shouldn't try it with a different razor or once "JaNort" is over ;)
i think im gonna try using the DMT and leave the slurry on the 4k tonight when i head back to the Boker i am using that has proved to be a HUGE PITA!!!! since i haven't had much luck with the Norton Prep.....which is probably an operator error issue more than a tool issue!
edit: 3 days in to the actual JaNorton month and we already hit 300 post......this thread is gonna be a BEAR to go back and reread or jump into part way thru!
