Thanked: 22Hey, that's just my personal observation using my [ancient] barber's hone on the polishing side. I use the lather when I'm past the "cutting" stage and going onto the [very desirable] mirror-image stage. And, like I said, based only on my observation, lather most surely cleans the metal to some degree, and it does a fine job at that! Quite honestly, I really could care less if my opinion is contrary to anything published here or anywhere, all I really was doing was adding my input to help a guy out. Bottom line is this: my shaving instruments are well honed, stropped to comfort, and shave well at that. And at the end of the day, that's all that really matters to me. I learned to straight-razor shave some time ago from an older gentleman [abt. my parents age mid 60s] before I had any internet [in the mid 90s]. My friend had been shaving with a straight all his life. I doubt he ever heard of chro-oxide [he never mentioned it to me if he knew of it] or that he even used more than his two-sided barber's hone that he inherited from his grandfather In fact, my friend used one razor [it had belonged to his grandfather too] and its scales had broken off years earlier and he clutched it in his hand as best he could. So, the bottom line is, trying to learn something new is fine, but over-intellectualizing the subject certainly was never my intention. For the record, my shave today was just fine!
