Thanked: 1Just finished honing my first razor!!
I just finished honing my first razor, and it was a tough one! It had a frown and several tiny chips, But persistence paid off after about 6 hours I have a straight blade with no cracks thats passing the HHT like a champ and I now have a shave ready Nielsen's Neverfail! Now my only regret is I wish I hadn't shaved this morning so I could try it out.

Well, what else are legs for?
Do look out-- the HHT is not a reliable indicator of shave-readiness unless you know how a shave-ready blade reacts to your hair. You'll know for sure in the morning, though...
Until then, sit back, relax, and bask in the accomplishment.

Thanked: 275Congratulations! It's very nice to shave with a blade you honed yourself. And then another, and another . . . <g>

That's a bit more than honing. Bravo for the accomplishment. Charles is quite right. Shaving w/ your own edge is a thrill and an accomplishment to savor.
More than honing, 'cause the frown and the chips are restoration work that had to happen before honing could be done. You probably won't look at another fleabay or antique store blade the same. You can do it, but it can be a boatload of work. 'Makes you picky on what you'll take home. Keep going. And again, big 'Grats.

Thanked: 1I just tried out the Ol' Neverfail and it kept true to it's name and gave me a BBS shave. Now to get started on the old Torrey. Hopefully it will be a little easier since it has no chips and the blade is straight.

I wish I could relate. I tried my first bevel reset + honing today and failed, not miserably I feel, but definitely failed. LOL
