Beginners, The 1k shave . . .
Hi guys,
How many times have you seen a beginner honing question and instantly knew (assumed) that it was a bevel issue. "Been on the hones for x amount of hrs and still wont shave" ect
Last week I read a post where some of our honing pros discussed it being possible to get a decent shave off a 1k stone with proper stropping (hope I wasnt being taken for a ride here lol)
Learning to shave off a 1k (if actually possible) would be incredibly valuable for a beginner honer, since 90%(?) Of the sharpening occurs at the 1k (wicked sharp bevel) before progressing!
So, without going full JAnorton (or jumping on the experiment bandwagon ), lets experiment with only a 1k, newspaper, crox , pastes ect.
All we need are some volunteers , especially those new at honing
All are welcome, Im headed to try now, Ill post my results in a few hours.
Good luck!

Thanked: 247Yeah, I'll do it. This sounds simple enough I might actually be able to keep up! For how long though? I don't know if I wanna do this for a month. If nothing else, it'll reinforce proper bevel setting, which is something I'm obviously not great at just yet.

Thanked: 13246Great idea ....
I would leave the crutches by the door though, no pastes etc: just a 1k and Linen/Leather and I would limit that too,,, some of these guys are doing 200+ laps on the strops...
Remember this only proves it can shave, and how sharp the razor is, your not going to find a ton of smooth at this level Proof of a bevel being well and truly set go for it ...
Way to embrace the challenge "epd"

Thanked: 993Here's what I think, and addendum of sorts:
Bevel set, 30 laps linen, 50 laps leather. No pastes.....as per the G man.
I'll do three EPD... 1) Chosera 2) Norton 3) King 1200. All of mine will be stropped on SRD poly webbing, and Premium 1 leather.
Hows that?

Thanked: 194I think this is a great idea! I look forward to seeing everones results. I am new to honing, not to straights. I just got my first set of norton stones. I can't wait to start walking down this side road of straight shaving.
