Why is it important? Because for those that hone, it measures sharpness. Why is it unimportant? Because it only measures sharpness.
Generally it simply functions as a distraction to beginners, which is better than the thumbnail test, which is a distraction and edge destroyer.

Thanked: 2027Perhaps HHT should be reffered to as an indicator other than a test, the HHI.
Your leg hair, arm hair, head hair (which I no longer have), your wifes hair,is not your facial stubble.
The hair you use for this so called test is not hydrated, warmed and lubricated with lather.
The hair that is used for this test also differs from facial hair ( all body hair is not the same)
The TNT will destroy an edge for sure, but is an indicator that you have a correct bevel, or are getting close to one.
A TEST denotes some form of actual standards and science,is no science to honing,is sort of like great sex,it just happens

It's only useful as a relative indicator; and even then, only if you're using hairs that you have "calibrated" yourself. Also, the HHT can still give false negatives or false positives; even with "calibrated" hairs.
Some people like it, some don't.

I don't know why the HHT haters hate it.
It is a test that lets you know the blade is sharp enough to cut hair, nothing more, nothing less. I think we all can agree the ultimate test is to shave. I have read people have gotten amazing shaves from razors that did not pass the HHT. I would love to try one of these razors from someone (I would pay shipping both ways). Personally I have never had a good shave from a razor that did not pass the HHT on toe, mid and heel of the razor, in fact I will not try to shave with a razor that does not pass MY HHT.
I also have gotten some horrible shaves from razors that passed the HHT with flying colors-but it was not due to pulling or tugging, it was more form the harshness of the blade.
