Went with 0.25 spray from SRD. Seemed like a nice safe bet. Going to try it on that surgical black arkansas that otherwise is pretty useless on razors. About 99% positive it's hard enough--hopefully it doesn't glaze. We will see.

PA, I doubt you can go wrong w/ the SRD spray.
The honorable Riooso kindly sent me a sample of felt w/ CBN spray. Wow. I have 100k and 200k diamond, but both need some edge smoothing treatment to make them comfortable. The CBN feels great on the face as is.
The honorable mrsell has more than a bit of experience w/ iron oxide, cerium oxide.
I have some Al. Oxide on its way now (Linde A),
The CBN on felt remains really nice. If I use no pressure strokes on a 3.5 x 5" pc of hard felt, I need about 10-15 strokes for the effect to be very noticeable. Riooso recommended an effective way to tell the different. When starting a 2nd pass, atg, take a stroke, then do 4 or so strokes on the cbn and take another stroke atg. The difference was quite clear then. It was one of the better tips I've gotten.

Thanked: 1I recently made a 0.75 CBN bench strop. I haven't used it on a razor yet, but I have razor sharp kitchen knives now
still thinking in what order to use a Shoubudani jnat, the CBN, and CrO for the razor (probably that order )Last edited by Riba; 05-23-2012 at 06:13 PM.

Wondering where I can get felt pads in a small enough size to attach to something. The SRD modular felt pad looks good, but it's a bit too long. Hobby shop you think?

Thanked: 267I did not get the close to my desired results till I got down to 0.25 and finally got what I wanted with 0.1
I have looked a little bit but would like some about the size of a barbers hone. I am really thinking of getting some together to give away as Christmas presents.
Take Care,
Richard

SRD spray came today & as expected, it's absolutely brilliant! Rehoned my thinnest extra hollow (dulled it on the other stuff) & used 1 spritz of the 0.25 on the hybrid side of my coticule (the ultra-hard DMT-killer side, not the almost-fast-enough-for-a-true-bevel-setter side). Cutting was only @ the very edge, but could not see any scratches at all under mag. Ended up doing far more strokes then needed*, but no harm done. Washed the blade & hair popping was there, but a bit muted. Palm stropped & it was better. Did 15 strokes on 0.1 CBN on felt** (synthetic & PSA backed, no less; got a sheet of the stuff from a craft store for $1!) & it was really felling hairs. Did ~50 strokes leather only & shaved.
Cutting was comparable to a feather DE blade, but of course the DE had more mass. Closeness was identical. Zero irritation & really went through a 2 day beard w/ no effort. XTG I almost couldn't feel. Keep in mind, this is my least favorite razor (extra-hollow, but kind of soft steel). This technique definitely works!!!
*Feedback was very clear: suction built up until it was pretty strong & then dropped off until it felt like the razor was on glass. Should've stopped then.
**I tried CBN on balsa & didn't like it--it glazed too fast & required way too many strokes, plus it had no give to it. I'm finding a slight convexity to the very tip (barely any, but still there) really improves shaving comfort for me. Probably something like a hamaguriba (sp) edge.

Thanked: 443I brought a stainless Dovo back to life last night, finishing it with .5u SRD diamond spray on a Spyderco UF. Seemed a little toothy right off the hone, but stropped on CrOx/felt then a long time on smooth leather gave a very nice-feeling edge. Does very well at HHT; will know about the shave later this afternoon.
--OK, shaved with it and I'd put the comfort at just below my best Sheffield/coticule pairing, even for the high-angle work around my chin.Last edited by roughkype; 05-28-2012 at 10:22 PM.
