I've been experimenting a lot with sandpaper lately, and I'm finding that it cuts much faster but leaves a slightly rounded bevel. I have a 1K waterstone that I use after the sandpaper to flatten the bevel out again and prep it for the 4K.
Hopefully the 1K Norton will let me condense those two steps into one. My current 1K is only 2" wide, so either way I think I'll like the Norton better.

I caught up on this thread late and it looks like you guys have it under controll, but thought I should mention that I've heard the Belgian Blue & Yellow are pretty popular with the Euro forums. There might be more information there.

I too have found the Norton 1K indespensible for restoration. Just a word of caution, tape the spine and watch your pressure! I've found that most of the bad press the 1K Norton receives is due to really bearing down on it. My experience is that by maintaining a constant pressure over multiple grits, you can accomplish better/faster edge repair than by staying at a finer grit but adding pressure. I've even been known to drop down to a 220 Norton for removal of really sizable chips.
Just another data point,
Ed

Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure.
I can see it now.
Josh's wife : Oh no. Again. Why did you have to buy yet another stone.
Josh : Yeah but Bruno uses one and...
Josh's wife : And if Bruno jumps into a pool, do you jump in as well?
Josh : mumble mumble ...
If she says anything about it, tell her that you bought it to spend less time denickifying razors, and more quality time with her.

Fortunately for me, my wife has been very understanding about my straight razor hobby. It helps that I'm funding new equipment purchases by selling honed-up razors...
And those hours taking out nicks can be put to better use...
