    Wink A Thank-You

    Hi,

Last night, I honed my first razor (a The 1000 that a friend gave me) after doing some restoration work. I watched a lot of videos on honing and I'd just like to thank all the experts like Glen who put all this great info out there. Like I saw on the videos, I stayed on the 1K grit until the blade was sharp, then just refined that on the 4k, 8k, and welsh thuri. I'm learning the thumb pad test and it was very valuable in judging the edge.

    Thanks,

    Ed

Just finished my test-shave. I stropped up one of my two daily-shavers, just in case. It was not necessary. My lather was less than perfect, but this is still the first straight shave that surpassed a DE shave for me. All my other ones have been about equal or almost as good, but this one was definitely better.

Dammit, now I have the urge to touch up my other razors. I think I'll wait until my new razor from SRD shows up, so I can see how Lynn's honing feels and then I'll know if I have further to go or if I'm there. I sure hope this wasn't beginner's luck.

    Thanks again,

    Ed

After the finest stone, should I be stropping on CrOx? I didn't this time.

Ed you need to try it both ways and decide for yourself, try 10-15 laps on CrOx depending on the size of the strop and see what your face tells you...

OK. I'll try it, then. If it gets much sharper, I won't be able to shave; I'll just hold the razor up so my beard can see it and the hairs will jump off.

It's definitely a good feeling the first time you hone a razor up and get an edge like that, congrats! Like Glen said, though, you'll eventually run across a razor or two that will give you fits. I've got a Torrey that I've honed several times and shaving-sharp has eluded me each time with that one.... maybe one day I'll get it.

    Ed, Bravo!!

Big grats on your first edge. It *IS* and accomplishment and feels great to shave w/ your own edges. Keep it going!

Thanks! I'm going to have to keep it going now, because I rolled an edge on the strop yesterday. LOL. Darn narrow blades are hard to strop correctly.
