Honing review
Here check out this post in the wiki very good summary of all different test including the TNT. http://straightrazorpalace.com/srpwi...ests_explained
It just takes time and patience to get it all down and you won't get it right every time but the times you get it right will eventually out weigh the times you get it wrong and then you will run into that one blade that no matter what will just vex you

Wow. That sucks and I"m sorry that things aren't going well.
We all have those moments, and I've been there many times myself.
Glen is absolutely right. It's much more of a challenge to hone for someone else than just for oneself. You can always try again on your own razor. But when you mail a razor out, you had your chance and your rep is in that envelope too!
It's not the end though. Take the good from that letter, discard the bad, and pick yourself back up. You will be doing fine again in no time.

Re: Honing review
I have got honing down to a science, magic marker, tpt, magnification, extra time on bevel and I still struggle! .... My edges are ok, but dont feel or last like the pros.
If there was a scale to 10 between shit and honemeister I would be a modest 5 lol.
What im trying to say is, your going to get better, always.
Check out the thread called "1k shave" I tried searching for it but my phone isn't helping. If you cant get a good shave from the 1k, theres no sense in honing further IMO.
Good luck Tyler!
Eric.

Thanked: 2591This is not quite correct, the sharpie mark will be gone but that does not mean the bevel is set.
You have to have other ways to tell the bevel is done, i.e no micro chips, if there is pitting on the bevel that it was removed.
Then you have to make sure you can take the razor to 8-12k and it shaves really well, then finish it to be as smooth as it gets then you are good to go.
All this is achievable with practice, just be patient and you will get there, I doubt anyone here learned in one day.

Glens counsel is sound!
While honing for myself has come with few bumps in the road I’ve also shared and compared edges with a member I’m proud to call my friend/pinklater. He has an arsenal of hones compared to my meager set up but he usually is pleased with an edge I’ve sent him to try. I think that the proudest I’ve ever been was when he sent me his Friodur to hone and he loved the edge!
I’ve posted time after time that honing a razor is black and white to sharpening a knife! (I know a certain Honemeister who admits to not being able to sharpen a knife to save his soul) anyway I do feel that the years that I spent as a meat cutter and sharpening my knives at home for all of these years taught me patience and muscle memory. That may be why in general I haven’t had many problems.
Something else is some of the honing vids that Glen did. I’d watched one when I first was considering taking the plunge and I just sort of ‘connected’ with his approach! I’d watched a 10 series posted at YouTube and that guy also stressed that setting a good bevel was imperative!
As far as setting the bevel; That is like making sure that the foundation of a house is good and sound, other wish the house would shift and become un-level.
Tyler, it takes time and PATIENCE! Don’t give up! Just learn from your mistakes and look really close at those bevels!!

Thanked: 2591You can search for tests that work to tell when the bevel is set, I personally like to use a scope, others like TPT, or TNT or shaving arm hair.
All those work so you have a choice what to go with that works best for you.
Did you hone the razor to get feed back for your honing progress? If that is the case I do not see a reason to sink like that, it is part of the learning experience.
You should get motivated to keep on going till you get trough the challenge.

Something that I'll do sometimes is to 'Spot Check' at the heel, the middle and the toe, before running the edge over the nail. Remember that every time that you do, you dull the edge!
When you think that you've got a good bevel follow the advice and give it a good stopping and a test shave! You'll never know until you've tried it!
