Thanked: 993This is indeed quite interesting. I can't speak for everyone, but I know from my own experience that my learning curve of understanding "honing" was significantly longer that 1 razor. Quite frankly, I'm constantly experimenting to "understand" honing. I need to "broaden my understanding" every single time I buy a new stone.

Thanked: 13245An Explanation of the Hostility
You might be actually wondering why we here at this forum really look down on what you did with your e-bay ad..
The first thought that will cross your mind it that we are somehow jealous or trying to hold you back , but please understand this has NOTHING to do with you, it has to do with the people that get their razor honed by you..
You might next think Hey I have been sharpening stuff my whole life, and razors just are not that hard, I would say re-look at your pics and re-read your own post.. You have just barely tried to do an easy re-fresh, and didn't get it right, let alone actually hone a razor..
What I and many others really fear is the poor guy that buys a razor sends it to you expecting the fantasic shaves we all brag about, and what he gets is a substandard edge from you (Proved by your pics and your posts).. His next thing is to give up with straight razors, and if that isn't bad enough he will tell his friends that they suck too.. Or even worse is the people's razors you will destroy with frowns trying to learn how to set a bevel...
SRP is here to promote and teach this hobby we all love so much, look at how many of us posted to your thread trying to help you with your honing..
Of course e-bay is an open market and there are plenty of other "Honing Masters" on there, amazingly, they also did the overnight honing expert class too I hope you take some time to think about the people that you could hurt with your inexperience rather than the few dollars you can make...
Oh BTW honing straight razors really ain't very lucrative, as soon as people start sending you razors that need actual honing and not just a touch up like you just did..
Just some thoughts for you to process, and hopefully you won't take them as a blow to you ego, but in the learning spirit that SRP is actually here for...
ps: (Just actually read you ad through)
Shave testing is essential, absolutely the most important thing you can do when honing, if you don't shave test each razor, you can't learn the nuance of smooth, each different razor has a slightly different feel.. You have to shave test to deterimine that... Sharp is easy, anybody can get sharp.. Sharp and Smooth takes talent,,Last edited by gssixgun; 09-15-2012 at 06:18 PM.

Thanked: 247My first "real" attempt at honing- let the criticism fly!
Wow, Glen. Your response is really on point.
Sub-par work (of any nature) is a dis-service to true craftsmen and "clients" alike.
I have honed and sharpened enough to know it is at best a labor of love and at worst a good way to loose friends and loose money making things right. I hone for me and sharpen as a favor for friends. I think money would really spoil the passion!
I appreciate the help and insight you have afforded me...and I truly respect your words above!

Glen,
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
Mere moments before you posted this, I sent a PM to shooter. I would forward it to you but it doesn't show up in my sent messages for some reason. I would like to suggest that shooter forward it on to you or that you request it from him.
I'll just say, that you should be proud as you are a true mentor.
Very, very respectfully,
-brianIt looks like you've been missing a lot of work lately... I wouldn't say I've been missing it, Bob.

I realize you are from Norway and English may not be your first language. For me such behavior, referring to the OP, someone coming here without knowing how to hone and then posting an ad on ebay claiming to be a professional, might be defined as dishonest, unscrupulous, or maybe reprehensible. That is my take on selling sizzle with no steak.
