I think a 12k will eventually make a big difference for you. It makes a difference in an already great edge. I've done most of my shaving off 12k the last few months and that makes for a great edge with or without some diamond spray to smooth it out.

I've done some knives on my nortons about a year ago. Then I lapped them and decided I won't touch them with anything but razors again.

Get a barbers hone if all you want to do is to maintain your razor.

I just sharpened my Deba on the 4k and butchered a chicken last night. One day I need a lapping plate; I hacked it last time with a piece of sandpaper, a flat tile, and some spray-on glue. Need to buy this house first.

I am far from a honemeister, but I get good enough results honing my own razors for personal use and friends' razors. I started off using the norton stones, and you can easily get a good enough edge off a norton 4/8k followed by pasted strop and then a few laps on leather

Since then I've really enjoyed using other stones, and I think I prefer my naniwa SS 3k and 8k over my nortons. I like the feel and smoothness of the naniwas myself.

But to answer your question, you should be fine with the norton stones IMO
