Shaving with facial hair is like a golfcourse. It's a challenge of rough and fairways. You are the skilled greenskeeper of your face?

"...unless they are treat with shameful carelessness." This is the best part. These guys took their razors seriously.

The best part for me was ........."draw the razor towards him in a manner somewhat circular" That tells me even then people were trying different aproach to the razor honing.

I'm sure there were many honing experts in those days considering that half the population shaved and many probably did their own honing as well.

Too bad their weren't shaving forums in those days. I'd love to read all the tips!

Very cool read! Thanks for sharing! Best part for me was also the, ".. unless they are treated with shameful carelessness..". Kind of a snap shot of the day where things were made and meant to last and if you were the kind of person who, through neglect or intent, allowed something to be damaged or wear/age prematurely then you were acting in a "shameful" manner.

We could use a serious dose of that type of thinking making a strong comeback in this day and age!

i thought it was interesting that they expected a visible wire edge when they hone.. i think that would wear out a razor pretty quickly if every time you hone you hone until a burr or wire edge is formed..
