Belgian would be closer (still not as fine, but with a smoother edge) to 1.0 micron. Shapton rates their 15-16k hones at just under a micron. According to that logic, 0.5 micron should be equivalent to 30k, 0.25 to 60k, 0.1 150k etc etc etc. I'd have some reservations over taking this at face but paste that I made of strop dressing and 0.5mic CrO2 powder got my blades significantly sharper and just as smooth than/as any blade I honed with a coticule.

Those are really fine pastes, way finer than any hone out there.
Hmm, equivalents.............0.5 would be like using a smooth piece of glass for a hone and 0.25 would be like waving it through the air to hone it <g>.

hone/paste
thinking i might as well stick with the oak/balsa strop i made with 0.50/0.25 diamond paste instead of buying a belgian, save money,,,,,,,of course to buy more razors with!!!!!!!!!

what paste would you use after the 4000/8000 stones? i would think the way to go is 1.0 micron.
or are the pastes just used to touch up between honing?
in that case do i need a belgian for after the norton.
straighten me out will you guys.Last edited by grottolord; 12-17-2006 at 06:01 PM.

I've gone straight to 0.5 micron CrO2 after Norton without any issues. It may increase your total number of strokes if you skip the 1.0 but not by much. You already have a viable solution, so another razor might be a good idea.

Or you could get another hanging strop from Tony, paste it and play around with that. It's just one more thing I'd like to play around with once the $$$ becomes easier to come by

I never think pasting a hanging strop is idea. Too much chance the flex may round the edge unles one really has a feel for what is happening.
