Nubatama Ume/ JNS 1k
I'm not going to get into the match about if these are the same or not. Don't care. I personally have the one branded the Nubatama Ume 1k (medium) from CKTG. It was a gift to me. I have a Chosera 1k. I cannot get this Nubatama Ume to cut a bevel very well at all. Seems to be a very slow cutting stone. Precise and solid, but slow. I got a bevel faster on lapping film! Perhaps someone can provide some insight as to why? What I can do? Their experiences with these stones?

I'll preface this by saying that I have never tried to set a bevel with JNat (or any natural for that matter).
The question that springs to my mind is - did you use slurry and refresh it regularly?
Apparently, from what I understand, this is the way to get a JNat to cut faster.Hang on and enjoy the ride...

The medium is quite fast. Are you sure it isn't the hard? The hard is quite slow unless you use pressure, not the pressure you use with a razor.

My JNS 1K is definitely a soaker, I soak it for 30 minutes before I use it.
I haven't had any issues as far as it not cutting, I do use it with medium slurry to start.Last edited by Bayamontate; 11-28-2012 at 03:39 PM.

Yes, a definate soaker for sure. I'll try with more slurry and see what happens. According to the CKTG site and comparing pictures it is the medium, yes. Also, that's what the person purchased, so I can assume it is correct. I've given it two good lappings too. I want to really love the stone as I've heard nothing but good about them.

As a sidenote, I personally tried the Nubatama Ume 1K as well and it did seem harder and didn't slurry as quickly but the results were not markedly different.

Thanked: 458If you're working a razor on a hard stone, the your first comment is the only way it's going to cut fast. If it doesn't release slurry, you can always make your own with a diamond hone. The only way any hone should be a dog in the hands of an experienced hone user is if the abrasive density is very low.
I almost ordered one of those out of curiosity, but already have the sigma power 1200, which is fairly fine for a 1200 and extremely hard. I haven't used it on a razor yet, though. I would not be surprised to find it settle in with razor pressure and want to cut less fast until it's refreshed.
Most of the stones are designed to create a slurry or even resist it under tool and knife pressure, which is pretty much unlimited in some cases. I think the hardness is an advantage, though, because you can clear them just like a finisher and use them on clear water for 20 strokes and skip an interim stone.
