Thanked: 9Norton 4K shaving?
Has anyone shaved off the 4K (with stropping)?
I think I might try this. There is a razor I worked on for over 5 hrs yesterday. Mostly cleaning, and I probably need 3 hrs more if I want to get it to mirror shine. I also had to hone out some micro chipping on the edge on the 4K, which dulled the razor. However, after I started gradually easing the pressure for normal honing, the razor took a great edge and tests on cheeks felt VERY SMOOTH w/o prep, lather, etc. Then Swaty - 10 laps dulled the razor (lapped Swaty last week so maybe more pressure than appropriate) Another 20 feather laps on the 4K brought the razor back to HHT and smooth tests on cheeks...
Just wandering if you had experienced something like this and if you shaved off the 4K without 8K, Swaty, pastes, etc.
Cheers
Ivo

I don't see why you couldn't shave off the 4k but be extra careful and don't expect an ultra-high level of closeness and comfort. Try lapping the Swaty once again and make the passes ultra-light (maybe even with a practice razor). Good luck

Thanked: 9Hm, lapping... Can't say I love it and I did it twice last week... but I guess I NEED to be sure that's not it, so looks I need to try the grid trick, hope it's gone a/r the first 8
I was using the Swaty dry yesterday, and other times when I get good edges from it I use it wet... but this SHOULDN'T matter so much, I'd think...
Cheers

Thanked: 9Ilija - I wasn't trying to save effort (even though I was at this baby for 5 hours) - I was just thinking it would be the same, as I have heard the stones do not have to be wet to whet well (quite an alliteration, I created )
Cheers

That is correct but water can only help as it will carry metal particles away and also provide a bit of cushioning.

Can you seriously pass the HHT off the 4K side of a Norton?
Is this before or after stropping?
I can get my razor to pass the HHT test occasionally witha 4K/8K japanese waterstone. I am so tempted to get a norton as I don't think my 8K stones is up to much.

Rob, if I were you, I'd stick with the Japanese stones. If not, PM me, I may be interesting in buying them as a gift for someone. Even though I own a Norton, I'm still keeping mine. Different tools for different jobs

Bobbo,
It's actually easier to pass the HHT for me off the 4K side. I find that if it doesn't pass on the coarser grits it won't pass on the higher grits.
If you can't get it to pass the HHT off the 4K side, you're probably either using too much pressure or your edge isn't ready for final polishing on higher grits. I keep doing 4K laps until the edge cuts my hair pretty well. It won't be as clean as an 8K edge, but it should catch and cut.
Good luck,
Josh
