Ebay razors, do I need a 1k ?
Gents,
The ebay purchasing of straights has been a new and interesting experience for me.
I have quickly realized that many that are described as shave ready by 100% positive feedback sellers are far from it, and interestingly, some that are not described as such can have a pretty good edge. Hit and miss, essentially.
My experience in honing has only been with new razors.
I have only been using my norton 4k/8k, and while I was able to get a shave ready edge on some of these ebay razors, I have a few that are very stubborn and simply won't get there or I feel could be much sharper.
Could it simply be that these razors need bevel work on a 1k? I was always under the impression that you only need to go on the 1k if the edge appears to be in really bad shape, chipped etc. But I get the feeling that I am spending ages on the 4k to get the razor to grab and cut hairs on the arm.
If I do in fact need a 1k stone, would a naniwa ss 1k work well with the norton I have.
Your advice is much appreciated.

I would say the naniwa would work well but the chosera 1k is the cat's whiskers. I wouldn't be without a 1k and I also value my DMT 600 8" diamond plate for larger chips, corrosion on edges and like that.

Yes but the perfect shave is fleeting too. Those whiskers are returning before you wipe the soap off.

Thanked: 56An important question to ask the seller is "Do you test shave the razor?". This doesn't necessarily mean the razor will be an enjoyable shave for you, since different razors give different shaves, but it will tell you the razor is indeed shave ready.

Have you tried and successfully set a bevel on the 4k? I went ahead and bought a 1k anyway. I got a Norton. As much as people are raving about the Chorosa and Naniwa I wish I would have gotten one of those instead. The Norton works just fine but I would like to see what the fuss is all about when it comes to the other two. Anyone else own a Norton1k? What are your thoughts on its performance.
