    Thank you.
    a matter of personal preference.

Just remember that IF you choose to add tape to the spine while honing, ensure you keep a close eye on the tape. Once the tape starts to wear, you'll want to replace it immediately. This is especially an issue on lower grit hones that will chew through your tape faster.

I'll only use tape when resetting a bevel on an old razor, then I wind up taking it off and honing through my normal progression (even when resetting a bevel I won't always use tape). It just depends if there are small nicks in the edge or not and how much metal I need to remove. I use the tape to prevent more wear than necessary in cases like that. Other than that, the only time I'd use tape is if the spine had a design on it or a gold wash or something.

What do you mean by gold wash? Is that the gold I see on the blade on some of the more expensive straight razors or it is a decoration on the spine?

    Thanks
