Thanked: 2Tape for Full Hollow Honing?
In the world of straight razor shaving DVD Lynn mentions that on a Damascus razor, you should put electrical tape on the spine to prevent the spine from being worn down from the honing.
My question is, should this be done on any razor that is honed in order to prevent its spine from being ground down?
Thank you.

I think what Glen's trying to convey is that this topic may have been debated once or twice before. If I may:
It basically all comes down to personal preference. Some do tape, some don't. I do, but only certain times, like if I'm honing a wedge. If I'm honing a full hollow on, say, a coticule (which doesn't exhibit much hone wear relative to other stones), then no I won't tape...
edit: once you tape a razor though, you'll always want to continue to tape it, otherwise you'll create a double bevel...-JP-

Thanked: 3226No show to watch for me anyway. It is relatively simple from my POV, you don't want hone wear you tape it, you don't care then don't tape it.

I really appreciate the insight about sticking to tape once you use it if you choose to.
Thank you all for the replies.

Thanked: 480Perhaps we should up the ante by bringing in the various tape factors?
Electric tape? gaffers tape? Scotch vs 3M (or are they the same these days?) Rubber vs Vinyl?
Breath no life into the dead horse! =P

Hey Swan,
You can search a find a lot of posts on the subject of taping. When it comes up from time to time we kinda find it hard not to have a little fun with the subject. Nothing personal and not trying to make light of your question, it's a valid question.
I'm a taper. I tape everything because I try to buy razors with little hone wear, or even NOS and then I try to keep them that way. As you recognized, it's a preference thing.
I think it is good idea for a new honer to tape until they have basically become proficient in honing. By taping you prevent uneven wear on the spine which can really cause some grief once there. After you get honing down, then decide if you want to continue taping or not. If you decide to not use it, it's an easy bevel set to get the edge in line with the spine again.
Enjoy, and have fun!!
Regards,
Howard
