    Default honing help

I have been working on honing and have honed my razor using norton 4/8 and naiw 12000 and lapping with chromium ox then stropping. The edge looks polished under magificatio
The razor cut hair like crazy but leaves my face raw and sore.
When using a pro honed razor the shave is perfect

    Any ideas.?

    Thanks
    John

    Thanks, Glen

I am honing a 6/8 Keen Kutter. 15 laps on Naniwa 1000 to set bevel. 25 laps on NOrton 4K, 25 on 8K,
    then (10- 4k.) (10 -8K)( 6 4K,) (10 8K,) (4 4k,) (8 8K,) (2 4K) (8 8K) then 10 on Naniwa 12K, then 15 laps on balsa with Chromium Oxide then 60 on leather strop.

This all sounds fine, so you have to figure where the problem lies..

Before you touch another hone I would suggest 100 smooth as you can do Leather laps on the strop, then test shave again after the face rests..

If you still are feeling rough then and only then go to the 12k in 10 lap sets and give it a Tweak and re-test..

It takes time to hunt down an issue, but I promise if you take the time it will teach you a ton about getting the edge you want..

You might end up having to walk the edge back down in grit, you will just have to keep messing with it until it clicks, once it does there will be this light that goes on in yer brain

This thread is interesting to me and I have a similar situation with a new razor. Well, new to me. I'm actually told that it's about 100 years old. I got it to shave pretty well, but I have found that I definitely need a good dose of aftershave to ward off razor burn. I assumed that it was probably just something about the old blade, but now I'm not so sure. I have been reading some stuff here and other places and I heard some people talk about getting a convex grind on a razor. I couldn't find a lot of information about why convex is good for a razor, which leads me to believe that it might not actually be good. What do you expert types think though? Is it good to get a bit of convex shape on your razor? Does that ease the shave a bit? Is that why barbers use a hanging strop? I'm definitely a rookie, so anything you have would be helpful. If you want to give me a link to a discussion on this, I would also be appreciative. I did a basic search, but I didn't find the answers I was looking for.

I've not tried shaving with the razor after the 8K. It seems very sharp after 8K but I have just blindly moved on the the finer grit, assuming it would sharpen the edge
    Even more.
Are you recommending shave tests as I move up through the grits?

    Thanks
    John

Shave test after 4k is not recommended as the edge is not polished enough to be considered shave ready. After 8k, however, you can shave and it could be useful to test the edge to diagnose the problem. If after the 8k with your usual stropping routine the edge does not feel right, it might be that you have not set the bevel in which case you might have to go back to 1k and do some more laps.

From your post 15 laps on 1k to set bevel is not enough, even a razor that has just left the factory it will need more than that to set the bevel correctly.
How do you judge if the bevel is set after the 1k, what tests do you use?
    Stefan
