Thanked: 43copper, Do you lap your 4000 Norton frequently?
I have had mine act a bit slow from time to time and with a fresh lapping its feedback and speed of cut changes by quite a bit.

Thanked: 4942Sometimes when a small chip simply will not come out of an edge, it is indicative of something else. When this happens, look at the edge under a microscope as the blade could very well have a crack in it which will cause you to look at other alternatives for repair.
Have fun.

Thanked: 43Good call Lynn, I hadn't thought about chipping relating to cracks.
I have an old Crown and Sword that had quite a few black carbon spots on it but was thought to be crack free. Then I examined it under the microscope and found that there was a crack hidden by the spotting. On the flip side, even under the microscope the crack was not evident untill I did some honing on it.
Maybe the crack grew due to the honing, and maybe it was there but was hard to see.
Anyways, cracks are not always easily detectable.
