Chips
Had chips in blade of razor did about must have been 300 circles on each side a few xs different pressures and the.chip still remains its a very small chip I'm using a 4 /8 norton after 30 mins of trying to hone and remove chip I walked away .. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong??? I also honed another razor using the pyramid .. I just can't seem to get these razors I'm working on sharp.. Some other razors I honed shaves awesome I believe the bevel is set on these razors that I'm having a hard time honing its killing me I can't figure this honing thing out yet.. Where are the mentors areas and locations located thanks in advance...Can I destroy these razors by honing them over and over ....??

I don't know why but some days it just doesn't work, put them down for now and some other day, when you feel you're in "the zone", give them another go!

Well, 30 minutes I assume with the 4K should take the chip out if it's really small. Check your stroke to make sure you have contact along the entire blade. use the old magic marker test.

Have you got a 1k or lower grit hone for the chipped edge?
Did the other razor have a decent bevel on it when you started? It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

It depends on the size of the "chips", as to what grit you remove them with. If I read correctly, you did 300 circles each side with a 4/8 ? I can't imagine that many circles on a 4K ?
For me, it would have to be a micro chip for me to touch it to my 4K.
Sounds like you needed to start on the 1000 , if your having this much difficulty removing the chips.
Use the 1000 to set yourself a nice bevel & work your way back up.
Every razor performs differently Bart, don't get discouraged. When honing becomes frustrating, then you've already lost the moment, so to speak.
Honing should be a way to sharpen your razor & relax your mind also. I find that my stress level declines to almost nothing when I hone & I'm just a beginner at it.
Put that razor away & come back to her at another time.

Yeah it's a small chip just ordered a one k I'll try that .. I'm still having tough time realizing when bevel is set or not..All the tests shown on her to check if a bevel is set r for guys who know what these tests feel like and shave like, for a noob it's difficult to know when a bevel is set .. The only thing I kinda understand is when the water flows up the blade and across the whole width of the blade I believe the bevel is set ..up just gonna keep chugging away and keep honing the hell out of these razors till i get it..

Don't worry man, you'll get it. If the bevel is set, you should be able to pop arm hair without any problem. Also, you should get good at the TPT. When you do it, you're looking for a "sticky" kinda feeling as you move your Thumb Pad across the blade. IMO this works better than any test to see of the bevel is set, but it takes some practice to get the feel for it.

Thanked: 20If you can get some sharp and not others, check that you don't have a slight smile or frown on some of the harder ones. I didn't think one had a smile but I was pulling my hair out trying to sharpen the heel and toe and finally realized what I was doing wrong! The smile is a whole new addition to honing that needs worked out!

Thanked: 3215The bevel is set when both bevels are flat, even and meet at the edge. At that point the edge is sharp.
As “thebigspendur” suggested, paint the bevels with a magic marker and do 1-2 laps. If all the ink is not removed especially at the edge you have not completely set the bevel.
A set bevel is a function of both planes meeting, how water /slurry acts on the stone/razor is not an indicator of a set bevel. It may be a byproduct of a set bevel, but not in and of itself, an indicator.
Look at the Honing thread " Trying to hone". There are some good threads and advice there that may help you.
If it is a large chip, breadknife and re set bevel with at least a 1k. I use a 400 & 600 for that. Your new 1k will take it out but you may want to tape the spine at least until you master the bevel setting. There are some good video on chip removal & breadknifing.

When back to.the hones started from scratch, did the magic marker test. After a few strokes some marker remained. So just kept going on.the 4k . All marker gone then went to pyramidfrom 15 down. Stropped on scrub then premium leather no problems sharp!
