Thanked: 0Hello, I'm a newbie here like most and I ordered one of these lithide hones from Tilly that everyone seems to talk about. I thought about getting some pasted strops or paddle but decided to go with the barber hone...I don't know why. Anyways I also have ordered a Norton 4000/8000 hone and I've watched the video's on people using these and they usually set in on a table or whatever and use both hands to hone. So I was wandering with the lithide hone if it was the same motion, as in moving into the blade rather than away like when stropping. I also read something about it fits in your hand does that mean you hold it in one hand and the razor in the other? That sounds hard to control, Or do you put it on a table like the Norton and use both hands to hone. Sorry if these are dumb questions but my mind wonders.
Also when people say they use the lithide for a touch up hone does that mean you use it before every shave or every few shaves?

Thanked: 0Direction is the same as with a Norton, edge first. Since the blade is longer than the hone is wide, you hone it using an X pattern.

I hold my lithide. The trick is to keep you hand well below the top of the hone so you don't slice yourself. I like to use mine with a spash of water on top. It helps clean the hone and also keeps the blade in contact when using very light presure.
Most folks touch up their razor when it starts to pull rather than cut. Depending on your beard, the steal in your razor, usage ( ie. rotation vs exclusive use ) you may get 10 - 30 shaves before you want to touch up the edge.
