    Default Henkotsu :: Bevelling

i have here a quite old Henkotsu; so having got the rust off, and it being my first razor

i put it to a jnat non-name half-stone from the bay [with 330mate stamps, a woodworkers sharpener]

slurried a bit with my 'mystery' nagura [ie, not-Asano-but-nice] to see what i could see

under magnification there was one area where it was microchipped out, so i flatted the Shapton Glass #500

using for the first time a iWood #300 diamond plate from Stu, seems good to go [actually im impressed]

so .. after a session on the SG ive got past the damage

but now i see that the entire tip area seems rounded, meaning the front 5mm of the edge on the hollowed side

[omote?] wont be getting sharp unless i remove a lot more metal

the ura [stamped] side microbevel looks ok

i dont really like how it feels on the Shapton tbh, i think im going to soak my Takeda combi benchstone

    a thirsty beast

    +1 we want pics.
On another note on a new Kamisori both sides are hollowed, when the Omote is very used it eventually becomes flat, and needs to be reground if there is enough steel left for that. The Ura should never get to the point it gets flat.

It should not be like this, but if you can hone it and it shaves well, then you are fine.

Was it like that when you started ? Possibly a nose reduction might be needed. Seems considerably worn.

its allegedly 60 yrs old, and if its ex-barber then its no surprise that its worn

how it got rounded is what i dont get, its not bin wheel-buffed

badly dished stone in the past, maybe? bad honing strokes?

the omote hollow seems done with a scraper or plane, not ground

    yes

im loth to lose much, but i'll see after i hit it with both sides of the Thirsty Takedas

    hm, im now within 2mm

this has to be the result of excessive-compulsive-strop-wear imho, over the years

if the 3 layers of handle tape are any guide, its had at least 3 previous users
