Default Best place to buy norton

    Hi,

Given that overseas shipping can be expensive, what is the best place to buy a norton online, considering I live in Belgium?
    I am looking either for a 1/4 or a 4/8. Don't know that yet.

    Default Norton

I might have a norton ordered that i cannot afford. I can maybe have it sent to you instead, it was part of a group buy from knifeforums.

I am looking for a coticule, so maybe we can arrange an exchange (as it may be easier for you to get a coticule or other fine european stone than it is for me)

Let me know what you think. I expect the total price to be around $75, give or take a few dollars for postage.

    Bruno,
May I ask why you're considering a 1/4? Unless you're planning to do some major edge rebuilding (e.g. e-bay specials) you don't need anything that coarse. And if you don't already have finishing stones, a 4K is not sufficient to bring a razor to shave ready status. Most of us consider the 4/8 stone to be the workhorse of our stable. I've acquired quite a collection of hones, but aside from final finishing and touch up (Coticule or escher stones), the 4/8 Norton is always at hand.
    Just another data point,
    Ed

I've got a 1K/4K Norton witch I would like to replace with a 4K/8K. So if you want to repair used or damaged razors and you need a relatively coarse hone I can send it to you.
Please PM me if you are interested in and we can discuss the details. Thanks!

I already have a yellow and blue belgian stones for finishing. They are ideal for razors that still have a good bevel.

Otoh, I am now restoring an antique that was completely bust, and the belgians are too fine for that.

So at first I thought to buy a 4/8, since these are good for razor sharpening, but I also hone craft tools. For those, I really need something that can cut away significant amounts of metal. For those cases, a 4/8 wouldn't quite cut it (pun intended ).

A 1/4 would be ideal because I can use the 4K for my razors, together with the blue and yellow. The 1K would be ideal for restoration as well but mainly for honing tools which I could then finish on the 4 and polish on the yellow.

And having a 4K separate from the blue makes it easy to do pyramids as well.

    Bruno,
You've obviously thought this through. I can't fault your logic. The 1/4 seems to fill the hole in your stable. However, I will say that even though the blue will do pretty much the same job as the 8K side of the Norton, I've found that mine (which I rarely use) cuts much more slowly than does the Norton so I typically go from the 8K to the Coticule or Escher.
    Cheers,
    Ed

I just received my norton 4/8k norton from this place:

    http://www.lie-nielsen.com/catalog.php?sku=WS

I paid 9 dollar shipping for Global priority mail, yet the real postage was 19 dollar. So mail them if you want. It came very nice packaged in a box with old newspaper . The stone itself comes in a blue plastic box with manual. I ordered on thursday last week, it was shipped friday and it arrived today.

I sell Norton 4k/8ks for $55. Of course there will be shipping. Why are you buying a Norton 4k/8k? Just take a drive to Vielsalm and get a quality honer directly from the quarry.

    I decided to buy both.
Gorila sold me a mint 1/4 for a good price, and I am waiting for more infomation about ernestrome's 4/8.

This way it is easier to do pyramids, as I can use separate stones for the 4K and 8K sides.

The other 4K side and the 1K side can then be used for honing non-razor things.
My mother (for whom I sharpen tools) sponsored the 1/4 so I can buy both stones without having to feel guilty about spending so much money.
