I have learned that at least. LITTLE to NO pressure makes for a BETTER edge!

That's absolutely correct. I think that's why, in the past, barbers used to use lather on their barbers hones. It'd give the razor just that little bit of cushion while honing thus eliminating the pressure of the razor on the abrasive.

I always just use the weight of the blade for the last part of my progression.

What about WD40? is that a no no to use?

I guess it or any number of other solvents would do the trick, but I like keeping solvents and my hones well apart. I especially like the idea of using the tape itself to clean up its own mess.

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

I was wondering about that as well.
Will WD40 actually HURT the hones?
I guess now that I wrote it.. it is WATER DISPLACEMENT 40... so I would think that the "Wet" part of the wetstone might not get "wet" LOL

    I hardly ever use tape.
Only to protect etching or other decoration on the razor.

I don't care for the feedback difference with tape.

Water displacement on the 40th attempt (it's a NASA product). I've never used oil or anything other than lather/water so I can't comment.

I hear what you're saying. I'm the exact opposite actually. I only ever honed with tape and now have one razor that's my travel razor that I didn't use tape and hated the feedback I got. I felt too much from the spine and not just the bevel that i'm used to feeling. Weird how we humans work!

WD40 to remove the adhesive residue on the razor, not on the hone (unless an oilstone).
