    I don't think it has anything to do with "necessity"; razors were honed for hundreds of years without the help of 3M. I just don't want any part of my razor, other than the edge , touching stone.

    FWIW, my 88 yr old barber instructor maintained all of his razors with lather from the latherizer machine on a translucent Arkansas stone.

    My best friend in high school, his father was a barber, so all us guys on the wrestling team got our hair cut for free. I saw him take lather & smear it on a barber hone(didn't know it was a barber hone back then), stroke a few times on the hone, then went to the strop hanging on the chair, then back to shaving.

    Yup, my Carborundum 104 instructs say to apply a thin coat of lather. Obviously soap or it would read something like "work the rubbing stone to a produce a "lather"
