Don't make the mistake I made when test shaving for the first time. I shaved my whole face, despite the fact that the razor was telling me to stop! Now I test shave the sideburn area only, and if it goes well, branch out to the rest of the face.Good luck.

okay guys so I said I'd let y'all know when I took a shave test, long story short both razors failed. though I do not know if it needs it I am going back to the 4k anyway and I will do the progression method that Glenn shows in a video of it (naniwa stones) through the 8k, then I will strop linen and leather and see if it pops hairs and passes the HHT test. I will keep you all posted and any tips that you guys might have for me please feel free to shoot them my way!

actually I'm going to scratch the edge because it looks like the bevel is not set all the way through under magnification and I will start from the 1k and move on up.

Thanked: 1184I hit this wall once and I only use the 4/8 norton with a 250/1000 king for a bevel fixer. Sometimes for me it's like playing a guitar. If I don't feel it inside there is no reason to try and force it. I am feeling like I am ready to move up the hone ladder to a finisher but not in any hurry. Maybe after my next batch of e-Bay fixer uppers. I have been shaving off the 8k for 6 months or so now and I may be able to feel the difference if I step up. I really want a zulu grey but not sure if it's the next best move me just yet.
This is a great thread.Last edited by 10Pups; 04-29-2013 at 02:15 AM. Reason: 1000 not 100
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

I actually feel that I have the bevel set now, under magnification everything looks even and I feel suction between the stone and the razor on both sides. I Bought a Zulu gray 10pups but I will not use it until I can get a good shave off an 8K stone!

Bevels set and sharpened through 8k. Then stropped. In two days I will attempt another shave test and keep everyone posted. Thanks for all of your guys help- just shaving off of my leg and arm hairs seems easier then before! Fingers crossed that I have it this time. Just an fyi, the first razor is a wedge and the second I believe is a full hollow. Thanks again guys- if you have any more tips or comments feel free to send them over!

Thanked: 247My only remaining tip is to let you know (if you don't already) that learning to hone with two almost totally opposite ends of the grind spectrum might make your journey more difficult.
I'd pick one and stick with it until nearly mastered (I say "nearly", because mastery takes a while...I haven't yet), before moving on.
