Sounds like a success story to me.

I do touchups however the razor is honed; so if it were honed with tape, I'd use tape.

As far as how far down to go grit wise; go as far as need be. I for one would rather drop too low than not low enough.

And yes, you can get a great shave off an 8k.

In the end, whatever works is what is right.

Most around here are addicts for this stuff. Back in the day 8K was the standard as a hone for finishing.

If you need a true touch-up you shouldn't need much. Personally I start high and go lower if I need to.

Great job Mike! Sounds like you nailed it. I wouldn't have used tape unless it was used before. The 8k doesn't remove much metal and for a refresh will not impart much if not any visible hone wear in my view.

If the razor had been honed with one layer of tape, you're fine. If you added one layer of tape where there was none, you now have a secondary bevel, and you're fine. Secondary bevels shave at least as well as primary. Just make sure you use at that one layer of tape next time you hone it.

On the hart web site it says they use tape, but I should ask Phil at classic edge if he did. I did not know if 8k was low enough, my previous experiences were not successful at all. But het, a 300$ razor should work better..lol

That's good work right out of the blocks! When your 12k comes, do it again with the same light touch and enjoy. What flavor of 12k did you get?
