Thanked: 14Honing problem
I am trying to hone a CV Heljestrand 5/8 razor and am having some trouble. I am using a Naniwa 1000 for bevel setting and a Norton 4/8 and a Naniwa 12K finisher.
the first one inch from the toe and the last one inch at the heel hone out fine. The middle of the blade will not get as sharp. When looking at the bevel through the 30X loupe, it is even at the toe and heel and thins out to almost nothing in the middle. This is all after 40 circles, and 40 X stokes on the 1000 grit stone. This tells me that the blade has a frown in the middle. When I put the blade on the back of my DMT it actually rocked on a high spot in the middle. Surprised me!
How do I fix all this? Should I bread knife the edge to make it perfectly flat? or should I just continue to grind away on the 1000? I'm Stumped.
Thanks for any help
John

I would have to assume you've done some restoration sanding on this razor. If that is the case 40 and 40 is barely getting started IME. I would keep going until she's poppin hairs throughout the length of the blade. Only then can you get to making it keen enough to shave. I'm no honemeister though
I'm sure some very knowledgeable people will comment
JMHO
YMMV

jmac,
If you have a good straight edge, try that on your DMT. Its not uncommon for DMT's to be slightly high in the center. At least see if that eliminates a portion of the equation.

Thanked: 2591You may have a frown, it is easy to see just place on flat stone as if you would cut it with the razor and watch if you see light between the edge and the hone.
You ma have an over grind issue, the blade is ground more in that area where there is no bevel. The way to fix it (if the over grind is not too big ) is to either use tape and hone till you remove enough metal to form bevel, or you have to correct from the spine. When I have to deal with such blades the ones with bigger over grind get the spine fix, the lighter cases work with tape only.Stefan

I taped the razor when I honed it. Could you explain a little further on how I might adjust the spine? This razor is NOS and no spine wear yet there seems to be a slight smile in the middle of the blade. After 40 circles and 20 or so X strokes with1000k naniwa the bevel peters out in the middle of the blade.

Thanked: 2591The spine is fixed by honing with no tape. Eventually you will remove enough steel to form a bevel.
To do this you need to be absolutely sure that you are not dealing with a frown, in that case you do not have to fix the spine usually.
Can you post some pics, that will help a lot in diagnosing the issue.Stefan
