Thanked: 346I slice through a piece of paper, or I backhone.
I didn't damage my stones backhoning a wired edge - I damaged them because I created a wire edge and didn't detect it until it was too late - the wire edges in these two cases sheared off while honing normally. But deliberately creating a wire edge just seems to be asking for trouble, at least unless you're very good at detecting wire edges, which I'm obviously not.

Lynn actually discourages backhoning. He recommends going down a grit--pyramids, in other words.
I'm also curious, because from time to time I hear about a wire edge popping off like this. I can't say I've ever noticed this happening. I'm sure I've produced plenty of wire edges, but maybe the shavings are smaller than I would expect. The finest stone I have is my Norton 8K, though. Maybe that has something to do with it.
