Thanked: 177J Nat from JNS
Im looking to purchase a final finisher from JNS. They have recommended a couple stones that are in my budget as well as 2 naguras. Do I have to have a slurry stone or can I use it with water only after the 12k or equivalent. Im looking at close to $500. Is it worth it? Lapping? Is the finish that much more? I don't care too much about the money as long as I can get that super edge eventually. I guess I just went down the rabbit hole! Thanks guys.

You can use it with water only as a finisher after a 12K.
Well, most of the time anyway.
Some JNat finishers works best with a hazy slurry to really max out imho.
The thing is, with naturals you really have to learn each stone as they are all different.
As to what kind of improvement you get from it after a SS12K, well, it really depends on your prefs in a razors edge I guess.
That, and your skills using one
Tell Maksim what you have, what you are looking to change/improve and he will guide you to a good stone within your budget.
I have bought a few from him, and they have all worked as I had intended for them to do.
Lapping a JNat in the 5-5+ levels really needs doing only once, if that.
They are extremely hard, and will not wear for hundreds of razors if used right.
I use Atoma lapping plates on mine, usually finishing with a 1200 Grit.
Good luck.Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Thanked: 0Tomo nagura can leave scratches. If it is very, very hard stone I wouldn't use tomo nagura. Slurry polishes bevel, but can dull cutting edge (IMHO)

I would definitely get a Tomo nagura. You will use this Tomo to finish the razor. I usually raise a Tomo slurry and hone on that until it breaks down, then I finish on plain water. Seems to work pretty well.

Thanked: 38Mines came perfectly lapped by Maksim.
After naniwa 12k you really need a lot of practice to be able to improve the edge.

Jnats are great, and Maxsim is a great guy, but some can be finicky. Some guys through several before they find one. Working the Naguras, TomoNagura, working the slurry etc...can take some time to learn. Buying an expensive Jnat does not necesarrily mean you'll get those killer "velvet squeegee edges"
If I were you, I'd get a wool felt strop and some .50 diamond spray first, give that a go and see how you like it. 10 lapps after your 12k should give you what your looking for. You can always get a Jnat.
Also, the new Synthetic Suehiro Gukymyo 20k stones are supposed to be killer.
Just something to think about.Last edited by zib; 07-04-2013 at 12:07 AM.

Thanked: 177Too late! Lol. I'm gonna give it a good go. I'm sure it will take some time. When I get it I will try it without the naguras first to see what I end up with. The way I see it, I used to be a big cigar smoker. This is healthier and at least you have something worth something if it doesn't work out. And I tell you since I stopped using those $4 carts, I saved a kings ransom! Have a great fourth all!

Thanked: 177Just got my stone from JNS. I identified the naguras. Any advise as to starting out on this? I was thinking going with the tomo which is the finer polisher and hitting an edge that was finished on a naniwa12k At least for starters or would you guys recommend going from bevel set? Or plain water? Or slight slurry from dmt. I just ordered a chosera 1k based on feedback here. I imagine the final polish would be 20 minutes or so. Full hone and polishing looks at least 45 minutes after the bevel.
