I know I saw a thread on the weak yen, but I figured this deserved a new thread.

I am working here, but still have to pay credit card and student loans back home. My bank (post office) charges 2500yen for an electronic transfer. Does anyone have any recommendations for something cheaper? I want to do it while the dollar is low.

I have no experience in this whatsoever but the first thing that came to mind was family in the states. If someone in the states (family, wife etc) had on line access to your bank they could log in for you and take care of your bill pay. Still a touch on the risky side but it may be a way to save 25.00 US.

Also not sure if you can pay bills with paypal?

Perhaps it is worth investigating if you can get an account on a bank that is more internationally orientated, like the ones expats and people working abroad (NGO's etc.) use. They often have branches all over the world and also you can login online to your account.

Also paypal can be connected to your current bank account perhaps (it can in the Netherlands), so you could transfer money bay paypal to your own account easily?

Just a thought, I've never been in the US or Japan, so no on hand experience here ;-)

The easiest way I know is Paypal to someone you trust, but that7s no always an option. Lloyd's TCB allows you to transfer money from any bank ATM to your account in the states, but the fee is still up there, somewhere around 2000.

I just do large amounts in IMO to my family for stuff like that.

i think the best way will be if you have account transfer money from 1 bank account to another.i have done between usa and turkey and payd 30$ for 3000 transfer amount.

In BoA, you pay $30 for non-USD and $40 for USD international wire transfer. 2500Y sounds like a reasonable fee to me.

If you have paypal account both in Japan and US, you could transfer money between accounts, then withdraw to your US bank account, assuming that's where your bills get paid from.

Have you moved money from a Japanese bank account into your Japanese paypal account? I was under the impression that this service is not yet offered on paypal Japan (unless it has recently changed). Withdrawing funds into a Japanese bank account incurs a fee and so does transfering it to another paypal account. You also have limits with paypal Japan ($600 per month withdraw limit?). It is a little convoluted so you will need to read the terms of use to see what you can and can't do. But I am pretty sure that moving money from a Japanese bank account to a paypal Japan acccount is not a service that is offered.



If you can transfer for 2500 yen at the post office, do it. Most banks charge 4000 to 5000 and more depending on the amount.

Receiving money from overseas to a Japanese bank is a little more smooth, and incurs lower fews (if any). I just transfered several thousand from my bank in Canada to my Shinsei Bank account here in Japan and it only inccurred 1200 yen or something in that range (and that was because the money was routed through another bank before hitting my Shinsei account). Shinsei charges nothing for incoming money and 4000 for international outgoing.

You cant even go from your bank card to paypal? I mean entering your bank bard number like a credit card and having it withdraw it?
